Many in the dive industry, take the "least restrictive" approach when it comes to filling NITROX cylinders. Industry standard has in some venues slipped into a more liberal approach to filling NITROX cylinders and state that pre-mix in "fine" for a cylinder not cleaned for oxygen service, however the CGA and Technical Diving International go with the more conservative approach and so shall ECD. We will only put NITROX (23.5% oxygen content or higher) into a vessel that has been cleaned for oxygen service.

Oxygen Cleaning Service

Strict adherence to Compressed Gas Association (CGA) recommendations concerning oxygen service is a must. These recommendations establish that cylinders containing 23.5% oxygen content, or greater, shall be cleaned and serviced in accordance with CGA pamphlet G-4.1 part 11.2.6. Most dive shops won't even consider pre-mix on a cylinder which has not been cleaned for oxygen service. As gas blending is a common method by which EANx cylinders are filled, the oxygen content in any EANx cylinder may reasonably be expected to, at some time, exceed the 23.5% threshold and in the case of partial pressure blending are exposed to 100% O2; therefore, all EANx cylinders must be cleaned for oxygen service. I have been certified through Technical Diving International to perform both visual inspections and oxygen cleaning services.

  • $20.00 per cylinder & valve plus parts. (doubles will incur additional charges)

The considerations for cylinders used for oxygen service are lengthy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call.

Here are some good links to info from Luxfer and Catalina. Although they refer to aluminum cylinders, the consideration on steel is no different.
